It must have been around 2000 when I first knew about George Perec’s «An attempt at exhausting a place in Paris». Originally published in 1975 this short and fascinating book is a recollection of «infraordinary» things and events that took place during three consecutive days in October 1974 at Place Saint-Sulpice. Sitting in different spots in this Parisian square, Perec observed and took notes, drawing up a meticulous record of «what happens when nothing happens»: people and buses passing by; pigeons taking flight and landing here and there; impressions of colors, signs, numbers, letters; slight changes in the weather conditions...

A few years passed by until I started wondering if Perec’s observational exercise could somehow be reenacted by means of sound. Many questions arose. How could sounds convey a sense of «infraordinariness» ? How could a sonic documentation of the activity in the square describe the events that unfold in time «when nothing happens» ? Is that even possible? Isn’t a recorded sound always a trace of something that has taken place and, in fact, seems to happen again and again everytime it gets played ? Was it maybe that the observation and examination of «what happens when nothing happens» is an exclusive prerogative of printed text and silent reading ? (arnau Horta)
